Village Trail - 3. The Churchyard

 

 

 

Hart Church (St. Mary Magdalene) is a very old church. It is a Saxon Church dating back to 675A.D. Under the tower there is the carved font. Carved into it there are the symbols of the four Evangelists (Gospel Writers). Do you know what the symbols are?

In the churchyard is a tomb of the cousin of the missionary David Livingstone.

In 1596, Ellen Thompson wa condemned as a witch and was buried uder the stile of St. Mary Magdalene church, which is the mother churchof St. Hilda's at the eat entrance to the churchyard
